Datsun Rises at India Auto Expo 2014
Feb. 6 – New Delhi, India – The opening day of the 12th India Auto Expo near Delhi Wednesday crowned a hectic few days for Datsun, culminating with the debut of the all-new redi-GO CONCEPT.
The concept car signals a possible future small crossover and a potential new segment in India, said Vincent Cobee, global head of Datsun.
“What is this concept? It’s a new take as an energetic compact car for up-and-coming very optimistic risers,” said Cobee. “It’s a very, very modern car in a great package.”
The redi-GO was joined on the stand by the forthcoming GO+ seven seater and a pair of customized GO compacts, highlighting Datsun’s plans to offer customers a host of personalization options.
The show came just a day after a special ceremony at the Renault-Nissan Alliance plant in Chennai, 2,200 kilometers south of the capital.
Complete with an A cappella band and distinguished guests, the event marked the first new Datsuns rolling off the line at the plant.
“The next chapter in Datsun’s long and successful history is being written here,” said Toshiyuki Shiga, Nissan Motor Corporation vice chairman, at the event. ”This is only the beginning”
Datsun production comes less than two years after Nissan Motor Corporation CEO Carlos Ghosn signaled the brand’s return, with the first models set to reach customers in March.
“Today’s a great day. We’re at the Delhi Auto Expo. We’ve been on this four years. We launched production yesterday,” said Cobee. “Today is the official start of sales for Datsun in India — the first Datsun of the 21st century.”
With Indonesia, Russia and South Africa set to follow India’s sales lead, all eyes will be on how Datsun’s first new vehicle in years is received.
