Building anticipation for the show, organizers of Car of the Year also inaugurated a new tradition in the award’s 48-year history to announce the winner on the eve of press day. This year’s trophy went to Opel’s Ampera. The all-electric Nissan LEAF won Car of the Year 2011.

“Geneva is always an exciting show. You see a lot of new concepts being shown here,” said Andy Palmer, Nissan Executive Vice President for Global Infiniti, Product Planning, and Global Marketing Communications. “Most manufacturers see this as one of the most important shows for giving direction. And for Nissan, it is exactly the same. I guess the difference is that Nissan is doing so well in Europe right now. As you know, we are placing ourselves, really being poised to be the number one Asian brand in Europe.”
